Box 5022, Wallingford, CT 06492. JEWETT, Charles Wood Charles Wood Jewett, 87 of Mount Archer Lyme, died Friday, (November 3, 2000) at his home. Mr. Jewett was a prominent attorney, banker and former lieutenant governor of Connecticut. Mr.

Jewett, a republican, was elected lieutenant governor in 1954 after serving in the house and state senate. In the same year, democrat Abraham Ribicoff was elected governor. That was the last time in Connecticut history that the two positions were filled by people from rival parties. Several months later the state constitution was revised to rule the governor and lieutenant should represent the same party. Mr.

Jewett, a tall, heavy, handsome man with thick dark hair was born in Detroit, MI on March 14, 1913 the son of Frederick and Caroline Wood Jewett. He was schooled in Detroit where his father was head of the Jewett Motor Car Co. His mother was a member of one of the earliest Lyme families. He spent his summers as a boy at the Wood home on Tantumarantum Rd. where he worked the family farm, sailed on the Connecticut River and accompanied his father's chauffeur as he tested Jewett automobiles on the rough gravel and mud roads over Lyme, steep hills.

In later years he often recalled getting stuck in a wet area above the Czikowski farm and asking the farmers to bring out their oxen to pull them free. Mr. Jewett graduated from the University of Michigan in 1934 and received his law degree from Yale University in 1937. He married Mary "Molly" Sheafe on June 18, 1938 in New Haven. During World War he rose to Lieutenant Commander on the carrier Enterprise and was officer of the deck when the ship was badly damaged by the Japanese.

After the war he and his wife returned to their farm house on Mount Archer Rd. He lived there until his death. A man who enjoyed food and cooking, he used to bake bread in the beehive oven in the back of the huge fireplace. He became a trustee of the Essex Savings Bank in the late 1940's and rose to president and was then elected Chairman from 1976 to 1982. He was also a partner in the Norwich law firm of Browne, Jacobson, Jewett and Laudone.

Although he never returned to politics after his stint as lieutenant governor, he was always highly interested in them and read three or four newspapers a day until his death to keep up with what was going on. Mr. Jewett is survived by his wife of 62 years; two sons, Jonathan Jewett of Lyme and New York City, Charles Wood Jewett, Jr. of Las Vegas, NV; a daughter, Jennifer Jewett Smith of Silver Spring, MD; nine grandchildren; and a great grandson.
