of Appeals died Thursday in Cooley Dickinson Hos pital Northampton Born in Washington DC he attended schools in Arlington Va dnd graduated from Washington and Lee High School Arlington In World War II he served with the Corps of Engineers 26th (Yan kee) Division in the European The ater of Operations Northern france the Ardennes Rhineland and Central Europe and was dis charged at the rank of sergeant He was awarded the Purple Heart tyledal and Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster After the war he received his degree in civil engi neering in 1947 and in civil engineering in 1950 from North Carolina State College I He taught seven years at North Carolina State and joined the civil engineering department at UMass in 1954 He was promoted to professor in 1967 and received the guished teacher of the year" award in 1968 and awards for his out standing work in 1978 and He served on many university committees and was the faculty adviser to the student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers 25 years He was a member of Sigma I Tau Beta Pi American Society of Civil Engineers Institute of Traffic Engineers and an associate member of Transportation Research group A traffic
